Air Classics October 2026
ON THE COVER:
This unique image captures the last two flying aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major fourrow radial engines — the ultimate American piston engine. The late Robert Odegaard was flying the Goodyear F2G-1 Super Corsair while Brian Sanders piloted Sea Fury Race 8 Dreadnought. Photography by Michael O’Leary
FEATURES:
THE REALLY FAST AND FURIOUS
We have decided to devote the majority of the October issue to a photographic coverage of the Super Unlimited racing aircraft that graced the National Championship Air Races. As we have noted, the day of the Super Unlimited is pretty much over due to many factors — including hugely rising costs, limited purses, and the inability of the racing governing body to attract major sponsorship. We have tried to include all the racers but a couple are missing — mainly due to the lack of adequate photo coverage. As these aircraft fade in our collective memories, we wanted to present a guide to these colorful high-performing racers. We believe this 70 page special section will become a collector’s issue and will look forward to your comments / by Jim Larsen, Doug Fisher, and Michael O’Leary
