ON THE COVER:
Martin PBM-3 Mariner BuNo 6571 was operated by VP-74 from the seaplane tender USS Barnegat (AVP-10) off the Brazilian coast. On 17 May 1943, the Mariner, which received the name Nickel Boat assisted in attacking and sinking U-128. On 19 July 1943, the flying boat attacked and sank U-153 with depth charges. While operating a night patrol on 2 July 1944, the Mariner crashed and all ten crewmen were lost. (USN)
